A PROPOSAL
FOR HYDROGRAPHICAL CRUISE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). DUNEDIN, May 3. . Recently the Government approved of a suggestion hv Otago Institute for the appointment of a committee to go into the question of Ksing the Byrd expedition barque, City of New York, for hydrographical a cruise on the New Zealand coast. On Wednesday the committee met Captain Melville and Lieut Shropshire, hydrographer oif the Byrd Expedition, to consider an offer of Captani Melville. subject to Byrd’s approval to ’Midertake hydrographical work for the New Zealand Government; The Committee recommends the acceptance. It is proposed that the vessel be employed from June 2nd to August.3lst. in making an east and west survey, at intervals of 50 miles, starting from Stewart Island to Banks Peninsula. The main object is to ascertain the strength, direction and hydrographic character of the current which flows up the East Coast, and to note how far it undergoes change'further north. The movements and migration of fish and plankton stypenr to be largely influenced by the action and character of these currents.
