In the Christchurch Mayor Election there were 30,54-9 votes cast out of a roll number of 50,649. The voting was Archer 15,392, Hayward 15,157, majority for Archer 235. At the previous election Mr Archer had a record majority of. 10,530 votes.

At a meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society last- evening, Dr Teichelmann stated he was having piopared a number of coloured slides illustrating Bnllers Birds of New Zealand. These had been photographed from the original drawings in Bailor's book. When completed shortly he would be willing to give a public display of the slides with explanatory notes to interest school children and others in (the inative birds and help to cultivate a desire to -protect the rare birds to the fullest extent. The otfer was greatly appreciated and it is hoped the display will be possible next month.

The death took place yesterday at the Grey Hospital of Mr William AlcTaggart, one of the pioneer coal miners of the West Coast, and a well-known resident of Runanga. A native of Scotland, and 74 years of age, the deceased was one of tne first miners or the Brunner coalfields. Predeceased six years aero by his wife, he leaves a large family of eleven, the sons being Robert (\lav~r of Run antral. William and John (Runanga), and James (lticearton). The daughters are Mosdames M. Dando (Sefton, Canterbury), W. Campbell (Christchurch), J. Doyle (Rapnhoo), T. Dunn (Barn-town). T. F. Kennedy (Runanga), T. McCarthy (Kurow. North Otago), and J. Southard (Seachwn, Canterbury).
