MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

AIAYORAL RESULT. AT HOKITIKA. The municipal elections yesterday took place quietly for the most off the day, the polling being weak until the afternoon wore on, when the voting increased .steadily and there was a rush in : the last 1* Fours.' The arrangements made by the Returning Officer (Jlr Coles), were very complete and the r'estilts : -of-thei inayora'l and half-holiday polls were declared"at 9 o’clock. The ..Other-Town Hall results wore completed ' before 10 o’clock, blit a long delay took placo awaiting St.. Andrew’s' Hall 'booth result, which did not come to hand till midnight. .

After tile announcement of . the result of the Mayoral contest, the three candidates addressed the crowd assembled from the top window of the Town Hall.

Mr Geo. Perry said he had to thank the electors very heartily for the position they had placed him in at the top of the poll and haVing renewed their confidence in him as Mayor. He congratulated the other candidates on the manner in which they had contested the election. He would take the 'opportunity at this stage to state that the satisfactory position of the town was due to a large extent to their efficient staff. Air H. M. Coulson extended congratulations to the Mayor .on his reelection. . It must ho gratifying to him to be at last returned on the voice ol the people in a contest like the' present one. Tie wished to thank heartily -All those who had voted for him. and it, was gratifying to know he was only 23 votqs behind. He also had tc thank all who had voted and worked for him. He felt more sorry for those who had worked so hard for him than lie did for himself. He appreciated very much the very friendh course of the contest; He-felt, lie had done his duty in .offering his services. Mr W. Jeffries.joined in appreciation of the election of Mr Perry as Mayor. It had been a cleanly fought election and.-there wa.s no malice. (U was a real friendly contest. He hoped the result of the contest will give the .satisfaction they do,sired. It approached in two years time lie would he prepared .to come forward again and offer his services. The large vote given shows that great interest had liecn awakened in the welfare of the Borough, and lie hoped that Hokitika would show renewed life in its muni cipai affairs. He thanked them again for the support accorded and called for three cheers for Mr Perry which wen. 1 freely given.
