RIOTS IN BERLIN
A SERIOUS PHASE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telecrraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 11 a.rn.) BERLIN, -May I. Late to-night the situation took a very serious turn in the northern quarter of the city mostly inhabited by working classes. Two to three thousand Communists, armed with firearms, clubs, and stones, under cover of the darkness poured into the main thoroughfare of Pankstrasse, and erected a barricade . with .surprising swiftness. Five hundred police opened fire and repeatedly charged the barricades. was only after an hour’s fighting wii.i the aid of armoured cars that the barricades were captured. Communist ambulance men were soon overwhelmed by the number of victims they had to carry from the firing line. The casualties •v/ are not known. Three police were \ killed and twenty-four wounded. ? . Fighting has broken out in the south eastern part of the city, which "as plunged in darkness. NOT A SUCCESS. BERLIN, May 1. According to the “ Pravda,” Monday’s events are not likely to be regarded with satisfaction in Moscow. The police achieved their main purpose of preventing two big processions.
