By Telegraph—Per Press Association.* WELLINGTON, May i. Referring t> a iiotic" .ssued oy tho New Zealand Workers’ I'nion urging men not to accept work at Kotemaori Tunnel, on the Napier-Wairoa railway Hr Cook (the secretary) has refused to give details, on the ground that •vitiations are now proceeding between the Union and the-Public Works T/epartnient. It was claimed that the water conditions are worse than in other tunnels. Mr Ransom, Minister of Publio Works, sav: “The matter has been trcjiie into .very carefully by the Department’s engineers, both local and from the head office, and it is considered that the prices fixed are such as will enable the men to make wages considerably in advance of the award rate for that class of work. -If some workers are at present finding difficulty in getting any work at the basic rate of 14s per day, I do not consider that others should refuse to continue in employment at rates which will enable them to earn approximately double that amount.”
