NEWS FROM DISABLED STEAMER. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, .May 1. The Melansian mission received a radio from the disabled mission steamer Southern Cross stating all passengers landed at Norfolk. There was no damage to the engines or propel lor. *• The steamer can be moved to comparative safety if necessary and possibly by Friday will be able to leave (presumably for Auckland) with a jury rudder. The tug is not being despatched meantime. CREW' DESERT. AUCKLAND, May 1. The steamer Tregonna hound for New Plymouth was delayed, the crew having deserted with no intention of returning until the number of firemen is increased from ten to twelve, asserting that they are overworked. £20,000 FOR INVESTMENT. AUCKLAND, May 1. The Public Trustee states £20,000 was offered for investment in the Auckland Power Board. The loan debentures are not from the funds of the Public Trust Office hut. on behalf of clients of the office. STEAMER RETURNS TO PORT. AUCKLAND, May 1. The Rarara, which left Onehunga last night, .returned to port during heavy weather. , GOLF PAVILION BURNT. 'CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. The Golf Club’s pavilion at llangiora was destroyed by fire early this morning. Incendiarism is suspected owing to several suspicious fims recently, including the destruction of the Kaiapoi Golf pavilion. PRICE OF SUGAR. AUCKLAND, May 1. The. reduction of 10s per lon in the prices of raw and refined sugars, except tablet and icing sugars, bv the Colonial 'Sugar Coy., takes effect today, and under the new scale the wholesale price of No. 1 A sugar will be £2O per ton, the lowest rate recorded for'several years. The last reduction of' 10s was made on February 6th. The pi-ice has been falling for the past two years, and to-day is £5 10s per ton cheaper than at the beginning of 1927. CLAIM FOR LAND. WELLINGTON AWARD. WELLINGTON, May 1. . The hearing of a claim for five thousand sterling for land in Clmznee Street, taken by the City Council, for street widening purposes, by the owners of the property, Patrick James Hannigan and John Campbell Francis, reached finality in the Supreme Court to-day, when Mr Justice MacGregor announced that the Court was of the opinion that the claimants should re ceiye £3,500 and costs totalling £75. BANK PREMISES DAMAGED. May 1. An outbreak of fire occurred' in the pemises of the Commercial Ban' at Eastbourne at an early hour to day, and the interior of the offic r was destroyed. The building is shared by a Chinese greengrocer, who discovered the flames about 2.15 a.m. and called the fire brigade. The bank’s office is only a small branch, which opens twice a week. The building was insurcjl for £6OO in the State Office.
