SUSSEX PUTS BACK TO PORT. AUCKLAND, April 29. Tile Union Steam Ship Compair lias received advice of a serious 'fire in No. 4 hold of their charterer steamer Sussex, which left Samaraiv on Friday morning in continuation ol her voyage from Calcutta to Auckland. AYhen the extent of the fir was ascertained the vessel put ba.ck U Samaraug, where she arrived on fin day evening. ;The after part of the lias been flooded and it wn hoped to extinguish the fire yesterday. The cargo concerned is principally r ; ce. bone meal, and pineapples. As soon as the fire is extinguished tl.e cargo in No. 4 hold will he discharged.

For a number of years the Sussex has been under charter to the Union Company by the Federal Steam Navigation Company and has maintained a rn-il-v cervice between Calcutta, Penang. Singapore, Samaraug, and Nov Zealand. On the conclusion of her last voyage to New Zealand she made a trip to the Pacific Coast of America and- then resumed her usual service. She is a single screw steamer of G9oi tons and was built in' 1990 by Messrs Hawthorne, Leslie, and Company, of Newcastle. Captain AY. AY .
