SOVIET PLOT
UNEARTHED IN CAIRO
(Times Service)
LONDON, April 29
The “ Times ” Cairo correspondent states the Egyptian authorities have unmasked a serious attempt by Moscow to establish ju Egypt, a Bolshevist propaganda centre. The eflort began two years ago when the Soviet opened negotiations to buy Egyptian' cotton and oiferod guarantees. It lormod a company called “’textile Imports Ltd.’ Its operations at- first appeared to be legitimate, but purchases began to dwindle and the authorities became interested, and found reason to suspect that the Company’s agents were engaged in propaganda in Egypt and neighbouring countries. Suspicion chiefly centred on Alexis Vasileff, who managed the agency. ’ The suspicion deepened when Vasilieff dismissed a real cotton export, substituting for him a newcomer named Hugo Rudolf.
The police watched both and found sufficient evidence to justify arresting them. The whole plot was then revealed, largely from documents which were found in Rudolf’s possession, including his diary.
