INJURED ON GOLF LINKS

A painful accident occurred at the Fairfield gold links, Hawcra, when the youngest member ol the c-lub, Geoffrey Dalgotty, aged fourteen, a .son of G. A. Dalgelty, lost the sight of his right eye on making a drive at a ball. Immediately Dalgetty had made his practice shot from the fairway, the lad lelt something strike his eye. From that moment his sight failed. It is surmised that the golf club struck a piece of stone or wood, and a fragment flew into his eye. TI {A NS-PAOJ F. C TR ADE. SHIPS. FITTED WITH FREEZING SPACE. AUCKLAND, April 27. Tin* Oceanic and Oriental Navigation Companys steamer Golden Cross, the first vessel of the line to be fitted with refrigerated space for the trans-Paeiile trade, arrived to-day. Besides usual cargo of lumber, ease oil, and general merchandise from Pacific Coast ports, the Golden Cross brought in her refrigerated space a shipment of 1850 eases of Californian oranges and grape fruit, of which 1660 eases are for Auckland. From here the vessel is to go to Wellington, Nelson and Lyttelton to complete discharge and commence load_ ing for the return voyage to San Francisco, via Honolulu. She is to return to Auckland-about May 20th to fill up, and arrangements have already been made for her to lift here a largo consignment of beef for the United States. Three other steamers of the line, the Golden West, the Golden Coast, and the Golden Cl uul, are having refrigerating machinery installed in them. The four vessels will-maintain’a monthly service between Los Angeles and New Zealand, making Auckland their first port of discharge and their final loading port. SEQUEL TO FATALITY. ASHBURTON, April 30. At the Police Court, Robert McKay, a farmer of Longbeach was dunged with having negligently driven a motor car so as to cause the death of Francis Godwin. The case is a sequel to a fatality on March 31st, in East St. when his car collided with Godwin’s gig. He was committed for trial, bail being allowed on his own recognisance.
ALLEGED SLANDER. £3 AWARDED. WELLINGTON. April 29. Before Mr Barton, S;AL. a slander action was heard, in which £3OO was sought from Jessie Jackson, married, oi Wellington. After evidence had been hoard, the Magistrate said ho was satisfied that defendant 'had sent the letter's/but that in view of the circumstances of the parties’ conduct, ho would award £3 to plaintiff, but more as a fine by defendant. If tliov could not behave themselves in future, lie suggested they should he Found over to keep the peace. BANKRUPT SENT TO GAOL. WHANG AR.EI, April 29. At the Court to-day, a young married mail, Ivan R. Ti. Brown, recently a fruiterer, who was declared bankrupt, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment lor having contracted debts knowing that he could not make payment.
TAUPIRI COAL .MINES. AUCKLAND, April 30. The annual report of the Taupiri Coal Alines, Ltd., states: The profit for the year, alter allowing for depreciation, amounts to £16,376, while £9,025 was brought forward from last .year, making a total off .£25,401. Preference share dividends, • amounting to £I6OO, and an interim dividend of £6050, representing Is a share on the ordinary shares, have been paid, making a total of £7,650, the same as in the previous year. It is recommended that the balance to bo dealt with, £17,752, should be appropriated as follows: To pay a final dividend equalisation account, £1000; to carry forward to next year’s account, £10,702. N.Z. IMMIGRATION. AY ELLINGTON, April 30. It is understood that the migration returns for the last financial year which will he submitted to Parliament next session, reveal a reduction approximately of seventy-five per cent on the number off new settlers assisted to the Dominion, in the corresponding period of 1927. The whole position is being reviewed by the Ward Cabinet before the end of June next.
