After yesterday’s regatta the large launch “Nimrod,” laden with onlookers, fouled the big Manly lorry boat “Curlcurl,” and live of the launch occupants, including a woman, were thrown-into the water, but were rescued.
THE MINERS’ PROPOSALS
LET ARBITRATORS DECIDE
SYDNEY, April 29
The Alining Industry Unions nro meeting this atternoon to discuss the .Ministers of .Mines, Hon. -Mr Stevens’ proposals for a resumption of work in the collieries.
In the light of the tone of yesterday’s aggregate miners’ meeting hope is not bright.
SYDNEY, April 29
The combined mining industry unions this afternoon rejected the State Treasurer, Mr Stevens’ proposals for a settlement of the coal dispute. The unions formulated counter-pro-posals, one of which is “that the mines shall be re-opened on the predispute basis, with a Royal Commission to inquire into the industry; such Commission to make an award on the figures before it, to which the millers shall agree to be bound.”
TIMBER TROUBLE
SYDNEY, April 29
The recent orders of the Court calling upon thirty-eight summoned timber workers to resume work were served to-day. >
While the Sawmill Employers’ Secretary says that he does not anticipate that the full results of the orders will lie apparent till Wednesday, the Union Secretary, .Mr Culbert, a Legislative Councillor, declares that nothing that the employers can do will affect the men.
If the men do not resume Work ,as ordered, it is anticipated that proceedings will he taken for the imposition of penalties. It is stated that nearly fifteen hundred men working in the city and suburban forty-eight hour week yaids are effected h.v the strike.
CYCLONIC STORM.
IN WEST TASMAN SEA
SYDNEY, April 29.
Cyclonic conditions prevail off ttie coast of New South Wales. Those lmve demoralised the shipping. Many steamers are arriving at Sydney late. Some are as much as twenty-tour liouis late.
The Mamma, from Wellington, anil the Maunganui from Auckland, report being in heavy weather, and U lG >' Win not arrive till midday to-morrow.
WOMAN’S THROAT CUT
BY MAN WHO SUICIDES
SYDNEY, April 29
A tragedy occurred this afternoon at Bankstown, a suburb of Sydney, as an outcome of domestic unhappiness. Ihe result is that Clara Hess, aged 2-1 voars. is. dead, and Philip Hess, aged og years, is in a critical condition. The throats of both the victims wore severely gashed with a razor. 'Hie man also had a bullet wound in liis head. The neighbours heard screams, hut they were too late to render any assistance. The husband was obseiied hacking his own throat in the bathroom.
SYDNEY. April 30. Phillip Hess died later in the hospital.
