HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FBI DAY. A.PIML 2(ith., 1920.

The Council met at 7.t0 p.m. Present: Messrs G.-A.. Deny (Mayor), .1. King, A. B. Eleoek, T. W. Dull - , D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, A. C. Armstrong. E. W. Uecnan, and Dr Teichelmann. The minutes were eonlirmed and outward correspondence approved.

MOTION OF CONDOLENCE. The Mayor referred to the recent death of Mrs E. A. Wells, of Woodstock, and moved the Couneil convey to Mr E. A. Wells and family its deep sympathy in their bereavement. ( arried in silence, Councillors standing.

INWARD COBB ESPOXDEXCE. 'l’he Mayor moved that the Council place on record its approval of boatshed sites at Hans Bay, Lake Kanieri, at the same time making no objection to the location of the present ones. Seconded by Air Jeffries and carried. From New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., Christchurch, advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of March, 1929: viz., 10 lambs. —Received.

From Kortegast Bros.. Hokitika, asking that overgrowth outside their factory in Davie Street he cleared, as they were unable to proceed with repairs to the building until lias has been done.—Received.

From Jas. O’Brien, Esq., AI.P., Greymouth, acknowledging receipt of Council’s resolution re appointment of second municipal representative on Transport Advisory Council, and also opposing reduction of motor taxation, and intimating that he would give full support to the resolution, when the matter comes before Parliament.—Received. From Secretary, Hokitika Fire Board, forwarding copy i.f approved estimates for the year commencing Ist April. 1929, and intimating that the Council’s proportion of the subsidy for the year is £"2(55, payable in four instalments of £■(!() os on the Ist April, July, October, 1929, and January, 1930, respectively.—Received.

From Hon. the Alinister of Transport, AVelling'toii, acknowledging resolution passed by Council in regard to additional municipal representation on the Transport Advisory Council, opposing reduction of motor taxation, and pointing out that the question *of heavy traffic fees and taxation generally is at present being very thoroughly investigated, and intimating that Council’s reprcsei’f a! ions would he given careful consideration.—Received. From .Secretary, Westland Hospital Board, forwarding information in respect of receipts and expenditure in connection with the farm work.—Received.

Air Heinz said the statement supplied was not a complete balance sheet as the capital cost of the ground was not supplied. The Alavor said the question of capital cost was not material as that had already been dealt with. The Hospital Board finance was not the same as a business and only what they were asked to pay on the levy was material. Mr Jeffries regretted that M,r Heinz who had sat on the 'Hospital Board for two years as the Council’s represent. - ! tive had wasted his time by dot finclin £ out tlie position for himself. He emphasised the careful administration of the Board.

From Secretary, Westland Hospital Hoard, forwarding copy of estimates on which levy for 1929-15)30 was struck at a meeting of the Hoard held on the 22nd April, 1929. and giving the requisite notice that the Hokitika Borough Council is levied for the. sum of £863 18s 2d, to be paid in nine payment of £96 19s lOd.—Received. The Town Clerk in reply to an enquiry by Mr Jeffries stated that the increased levy would not mean an increase in the special rate, but would bo arranged by a reduction of the amount paid into the sinking fund account.

Mr Jeffries said ho was glad to hear the Town Clerk’s statement.

From Robert Ford, application for a wafer service connection to Sections 1087-8, and 33 and 34, Gibson’s Quay, lor the purposes of a brewery.—Received and granted ; meter to be provided by applicant. From W. Keller, Keller’s Hotel, application for permission to extend sit-ting-room window at hotel in Weld Street a distance of ten niches over the street.—Received.

From William Wilson, agent tor Mrs 15. Thompson, npplicsition lor consent to transfer sections 097 and 998. Weld Street, to Mrs I. M. Calairi.—rßcceivod and approved. From .Mrs P. Kinvan asking ‘for attention to footpath.—Received and referred to Public Works Committee. From W. H. Williams, asking for road access and drainage to sections, Tudor Street.—Received ; referred to now Council. REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £1(19 Ids 10d, payments £639 18s (id, credit balance £177 Ids.—Received. Accounts amounting to £2(52 3s (id were passed 'for payment. VALEDICTORY. The Mayor (Mr Perry) said the meeting was the last one of the present Council, and lie took the opportunity of expressing his appreciation of the manner in which Councillors had worked to advance the best interests of the Rorough and the support they had given him as Mayor. He also wished to voice his appreciation of the splendid work of the office and road staff. The ratepayers should be very thankful

to have such a painstaking and capable set of officers.

Air Evans expressed appreciation of the courtesy also shown h.v the .Mayor to Councillors and of the happy manner in which he had always carried on the business of the Council. Air Heinz said they bad been a happy family together, in lact lie thought they were too happy. Some differences would have been ol advantage at times. Mr Jeffries endorsed the remarks. Hu had served as Councillor under the Mayor for thirteen years and appreciated him for the capable and impartial manner in which he had carried out his duties.

The Alavor hriellv acknowledged the references made and the C ouncil rose at 8.15 p.m.
