BETTER PROSPECTS
MR TAVERNER’S VIEW
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.')
BLENHEIM, Aprli 2(1
Tin* Minister of Railways, accompanied by Messrs 1:1. H. Sterling and E. Philips Turner, arrived at Blenheim late yesterday afternoon. At a civic reception Mr Taverner regretted the brevity of his stay, but promised to return in a few weeks, when lie would inspect the route of the South Trunk line.
In the course of his reply, the Minister sirtd the South Island had been neglected in the past. ..It had not had a fair share of consideration or of developmental expenditure. If the proposed steamer service for Victoria, to Hobart and Bluff came to reality, in conjunction with the completion of the
-.ain Trunk, it would do much to put the South Island on the map.
The Minister attended a banquet in honour of the early settlers of the Starborough estate to-night, returning to Wellington to-morrow.
