A start has been made with the Fox Glacier track in order to giv< improved means of access to the notable glacier. In conjunction with the track, a suspension bridge is to be erected across the Fox river. With the opening of the fine hostel at Welieka there are increasing numbers of visitors to the Fox Glacier region

The Ministerial party left for tin south this morning. It was intended to call at the Forestry Nursery a 1 Back Creek on route, and take deputations at Boss. Harihari, Matainui and Okarito. The intention of proceeding to Welieka this evening war abandoned, and the party will stay at Wailio Gorge to-night. The return to Greymouth will bo accomplished to-morrow. Mr O’Brien, M.P.. accompanied the party south.

At a meeting of the Hokitika School Committee last evening prior to the meeting of householders, all members were present. The Woodstock Committee wrote complaining of non attendance of dental officer. It was resolved to reply pointing out no dental officer had been in the district for the past five months. The annual report to be submitted to the annual mooting was “Chairman (Mr Armstrong) thanked members for the support given lrim'duTing the past, year. The meeting then terminated.

Mr E. A. Wells, County Chairman, returned from South Westland yesterday. While in the south, visits were paid to all the centres as far as the Wclioka, and local requirements looked into. Mr Wells was impressed with the amount of work done on the highways. and the fine type of bridges being put in. As a result of the visit, work on the 'Three Milo track near Okarito. is being expedited to serve the mining venture now being established in that district, and to permit- that to he done, work on Okarito road is suspended temporarily. Work on the latter will be resumed as soon as tbe County road plant can be removed from Harilmri where the district roads are receiving attention. The roads at Wataroa are also to be graded and generally if is hoped to have all the southern district roads in fair order for the winter.

St. Mary’s Literary and Debating Club held its first meeting last evening and was highly successful. There was a good attendance of members and great enthusiasm _ was shown. Hoing Ihe opening night of the season no set programme was arranged and a Question Rox evening was decided on. Many inloresting questions were asked and capably answered. During the course of tbe evening it was announced that Mr D. Stuart bad donated a handsome silver cup for coinpetition among the members. Tbe announcement was received with appreciation and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the donor for his generosity. Wlmt form tbe competition will takc> has been left in the hands of the committee to decide, and no doubt when the contest commences great rivalry will take place among the members.
