The award of tho Stanhope Gold Medal for the bravest deed of 11)28 to a South African farmer in recognition of his gallant rescue of a man from the very jaws of a shark is the second time that such an act has been honoured in this way. The story of the first incident would seem pure .fiction if it were not set out in the official records both ol the Admiralty ami of the Koval Humane Society. It occurred in 181)2, when a naval sailing cutter was lying at anchor off the const of Zanzibar. "While two of her moil were bathing near the boat a large shark appeared close alongside. No weapons were at hand, and ono man at least seemed doomed. Without hesitation the officer in charge id the cutter, a boatswain, jumped into the water right on top of tho shark. If is leap actually landed him on its back! Tho surprise was too much for the shark; it made off at once, and gave time for the three mi'll, rescuer and rescued, to l>e hauled to safety. Tho hero of the episode— In' is now a lieutenant commander on the retired list of the Royal Navy—received the silver modal of the Royal Humane Society, and was promoted in rank by the Admiralty, in addition to being awarded the crowning distinction of' the Stanhope Gold Modal.
