POPPIES FOR REMEMBRANCE

Many Haims are made upon the public for its generous support, but it would lie difficult to name one more deserving of a sympathetic response than that which will be advanced in our streets to-day. The poppy that grew so vividly in the fields of Flanders, where so much rich blood was shed for the Empire, has become a recognised symbol of remembrance remembrance of the glorious dead and of duty towards those who, in upholding freedom’s cause, suffered an impairment of their fitness to holt*' theii own in the battle of life. It is essential that the more unfortunate of the returned soldiers, debarred by pliyiscal disability from competing in the ordinary labour market, should be assisted to earn their livelihood.

Country and town will vie with one another, it is hoped, in responding to this meritorious appeal. In all the circumstances the hope that has been expressed that the Poppy Day collection in this community may exceed the amount yielded on any previous occasion should not be unduly optimistic. The call that is made upon individuals is a small one, hut if it is met by everybody in the right spirit the supply of poppies should be inadequate to meet 'the demand, and the aggregate response should represent a sum that will contribute greatly towards helping the disabled returned soldeirs to earn their living in the months that are Poppies for remembrance! The words should bring their poignant thoughts to each and all of us. There should lie few. indeed, who will be too l>us» to pause and buy a red poppy and subsequently wear it.
