N.S.W. MINERS’ CHALLENGE

SYDNEY, April 18
The Coal Miners’ Federation issued a statement at the conclusion of the Coal Conference to-day, when the negotiations for a settlement of the dispute completely broke down. Th(> Federation declares: It is quite apparent that the owners will agree to (lie re-opening of the mines only on their own terms, to which the miners will not agree..
" The Federation have reiterated their challenge to the mine owners for a searching inquiry into the coal industry.
ACQUITTED OF MURDER. SYDNEY, April 18
Joseph Lever, who was charged with the murder of his son Harold at Dunedoee (on March 4th), was acquitted.
N.Z. HORSES SOLD.

The Now Zealand horse. Catkin, has been sold to. a Melbourne sportsman and will in future be trained there by U. Grabell.
Another New Zealander,' Bosun, has changed hands at 440 guineas.

A Commonwealth loan of seven millions at five and a half per cent has been fully subscribed.
