FELL OFF TRAIN

MOTHER AND INFANT

WHANGAREI, ApTiT 15

Mrs D. Rice, aged 19, of Whangarei, a passenger from Opua, was at Mair station when tho train gave a jerk. The woman, who had a year old baby in one arm and a package in the other hand, was thrown between carriage and platform and dragged some distance suffering a comminuted fracture of the thigh. The baby fell between the rails, hut miraculously escaped injury ,by the moving train. Mrs Rice is in Whangarei hospital.

At a crossing on the line the same train ran into a small car which had capsized after bolting down an incline owing to a defective brake. A man, woman and child, who were occupants, just managed to escape. The car was smashed to fragments.

DROWNING ACGTDENT

WATROA, April 16,

The body of Harry Turetalii was recovered and at the inquest this morning a . verdict of accidental drowning while crossing the river was returned.

Several members of the staff at Auckland Hospital are suffering from influenza, one of the patients being a member of the resident medical staff.

A SERIOUS FIRE

DUNEDIN, April 16

A mysterious fire which completely gutted three houses occurred at Tomahawk this morning.

' In the absence of any fire engine the neighbours and passers-by assisted in an attempt to, extinguish the flames hut they were helpless owing to a lack Of fire-fighting equipment. The hulk of the furniture was removed undamaged,' but ■ three buildings themselves were totally destroyed, despite all efforts to save them.- The cause of the outbreak iis a mystery.

INSURANCE CLAIM DISALLOWED.

AUCKLAND, April 15

Mr Justice Kennedy gave judgment in the Supreme Court against two Dalmatians who claimed £1450 on a fire insurance policy. The claim was contested by the Australian Provincial Assurance Association on the ground that the policy had been rendered void because plaintiffs, when making their proposal for insurance, had not disclosed a risk which had already been declined by another insurance company.
