At a sitting of the Juvenile Court at Greymouth, three lads appeared charged with having wilfully damaged 20 panes of glass to the value of £7. t.ie .property of the Kumara Jockey Club. They were reprimanded by the Magistrate and their fathers ordered to pay £2 each, .the amount to 1 e paid over to the Kumara Jockey Club.
On Monday the various Dost Offices throughout the Dominion commented issuing the new number plates for motor vehicles, although the last date for relicensing is not until May 31st. Only two clerks were required to deal with the applications at the Chief Post Office, Christchurch, the number received during the day being fewer than 50.
Saturday next will be Poppy Day for the sale of popnics to wear on Anzac Day (25th). Mrs Perry (Mayoress) is arranging for the sale of poppies through the Girl Guides, and a large sale is hoped; for. Poppies have been distributed through the district already for sale. The proceeds are used for the benefit of exservicemen.
In connection with the approaching County elections .Messrs 'l'. O’Neil (Kokatahi) and M. Keenan (Woodstock) are likely to offer themselves for seats in the Central Riding in addition to two of the sitting members Messrs Wells (at present Chairman) and Cliostcrman. 'There will he three to be elected, Mr Morel a former representative having left the district.
Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West' Coast Health Ditricts during the week ended noon on Monday totalled 81. as follows: —Canterbury: Scarlet fever, 36; diphtheria, 1; tuberculosis. 11; pneumonic influenza, 1; puerperal sepsis, 1; eclampsia, 2. West Coast: Scarlet fever, 2; diphtheria, 4; tiTcrculosis, 1; puerperal sepsis, 2. There were two deaths in the Canterbury district, one each from scarlet fever and tuberculosis.
At the Greymouth bowling green n match was played on Saturday between the Runanga and Greymouth clubs for the Reynolds Badges, which the visitors wen. thanks to a large score by Rae’s rink, which defeated Blair’s rink by no fewer than 4.1 points to 7. In every other instance the Greymouth i,.iks were successful by a small margin, but the totals gave Runanga a majority of 17 points, their score totalling 112 and Greymouth’s 95.
Of the ,)8 eases of scarlet fever reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts for the week ended noon on Monday, 17 were in the metropolitan area and of these six wore in the City. Two cases were reported from the West Coast. During the week there was one death from scarlet fever in the Canterbury district. For the 48 hours ended noon on Monday five eases were reported; four in the metropolitan area (3 Hal.swell County, 1 Paparuft County), and one from Aharon County.
A nice point in connection with municipal rating is likely to engage the attention of the Supreme Court. Recently an Auckland legal firm informed the .Xorthcote Borough Council that action would be taken to test the validity of its refusal to accept half rates in respect to a property where the dwelling house had been vacant for 12 months. The council contended that section 69 of the Rating Act applied to rates levied on capital and annual values, hut as Nortlicote is rated on' the unimproved value, the land valuation only being rated, no remission could lie made in the ease of unoccupied buildings. In view of the importance of the matter to all rating authorities throughout the Dominion, the Council referred the case to the Municipal Association of New Zealand. The executive of the association has approved the case as one of general interst to local bodies, and has accordingly agreed that the association should take up the matter for the purpose of obtaining a declaratory judgment of the Supreme Court.

Miss Mary Martin, pupil of the Greymoiith Convent, lias been advised by the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of .Music, London, that an Exhibition in Violin, tenable at the Royal College of Music, London, has been awarded to her. This is the first time that an Exhibition, tenable at the Royal College itself, has been offered to any pupil, in this district. Miss Martin, m the practical examination held in November, 1928, obtained Advanced Grade Honours.
The death took place at Westland Hospital yesterday dbout one o’clock of Mr Ernest I. Millner (Brownie), who hnd been an inmate for the past 17 ears. The. deceased was a native of Hau Hau and was 52 years of age, and was unmarried. He was generally popular and suffered from heart trouble He leaves a sister (Mrs W: Kerr of Fitzherbert Street) and two brothers .nr oallies Millner of Hokitika and- Mr William Millner of Knnieri). The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon.
The Annual Chrysanthemum Show takes place on Wednesday, May Ist, in the Soldiers’ Hall. This event is always looked forward to by flower fanciers, and so the present,venture promises to-eclipse any of its predecessors. . In addition to the display there will be a produce, cake and sweet stall, and therein should be found plenty to attract the eye of the customer. The object of the show is a worthy one and should be an incentive of good patronage.
The funeral of the late Mrs E, A. Wells of Woodstock took place yesterday afternoon, and the large attendance of mourners testified to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. There were about 30 cars in the cortege. The services at St. Andrew’s Church, Ivanieri,, and also at the graveside, were impressively conducted by the Rev Nelson Wright. Those present included representatives of the several local bodies with which Mr Wells is connected, the County Council and Hospital Board attending as a body. There were a very large number of floral tributes, a motor car having to be utilsed to convey them to the graveside.
