There were lively scenes at Valetta, following' on the release of Doctor Mishit Jioiuiici, a Maltese Parliamentarian who was imprisoned on April Bth. during the pleasure of the House of Parliament in connection with the publication of an alleged distorted version of tbe Speaker’s statement in reference to the political-religious question, which is now being investigated, and also tile release of Signor Salafia, a newspaper editor, who was ordered on April sth. to be detained during the House’s pleasure lor an alleged breach of privilege. Both the Government supporters and u..„ opponents gathered m strength at \ alettn had paraded the town, threatening disturbances. The police intervened, and they were in most cases successful, except outside the Constitu- . lonal Clu i, where the Nationalists, when passing, carrying a black flag, shouted “Down with England!” The Constitutional Club mem tiers rushed out and destroyed the black flag, Hoisting a Union Jack and a Maltese flag, and singing “God Save the King.” Eventually order was restored. There was one arrest made, that of Alfred Peneini, an ex-soldier, who allegedly shouted “Down with England!” He was taken into custody.
