FATAL FALL FROM LORRY

Charlie Phillipson, while riding home on the back of lorry from Teararoa fell oil'. He was subsequently picked up, but was found to be dead. The deceased’s only known relative was a sister, believed to reside at Greenland. Auckland. Enquiries" there have -failed to locate her.

FATAL FALL ON SHIP

CHRISTCHURCH. April 10

An inquest was hold 10-day into the death of Jack Ronald Malcolm Miller, aged 28. who was found lying unconscious at the bottom of the bold ol the s.s, “Coptic” at Lyttelton on April 3rd, and who died at Christchurch Hospital the following d-ay. lie had evidently fallen down the previous day and been unconscious during the whole afternoon and night. Ihe cause of death was a fractured skull. The- evidence was that part of the ship where Miller fell was dark and that it would ho quite possible for him to trip and fall. He had business on board the ship with gangs ol men irom his firm working on hoard, and probablv he had been looking for them, and when in aii unfamiliar part of the ship, lie met with an accident. .The verdict was that Miller died as the result of injuries received when he accidentally 'fell down the hold on the motor ship Coptic.

MAN FOUND UNCONSCIOUS. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 9. Frederick Barrant, described as a hairdresser; of Wellington, was found unconscious on the road, a tew miles outside Palmerston North to-night. He was removed to the hospital. His condition is reported to he serious.

William Worsley, aged twenty-six, a fitter was charged at the Magistrate s Court to-day with having committed perjury while giving evidence in the Supreme Court on February 6th. in the ease in which an attendant at Porirua .Mental Hospital was charged with assaulting a patient. It was alleged that the accused stated that the patient was injured as the result of lighting with another p..uent.

AN UNUSUAL CASE

WELLINGTON, April 11

A somewhat unusual case came before the N.M. when Mrs Leete was summoned for keeping a number of Pomeranian dogs in premises alleged to be dangerous to health and offensive. Ilioie was a second charge that the dogs were a comnion nuisance on account oi their continuous barking.

Defendant’s counsel said lie had a complete answer and sixteen witnesses who would say they were not annoyed by the flogs. His client was a breeder of Pomeranians and was particular about cleanliness. He hinted the prosecution really had nothing to do with dogs, but was the result oi a private quarrel and really meant to put the defendant to expense.

Counsel for the plaintiff told a different store. He averred one dog in particular harked incessantly, and the others were nearly a.s had. r I he health of the complainant’s wile suffered from the noise.

At the Magistrate’s Cmrt Roy Hobbard and Reginald Stuart Forbes were charged with stealing five steers, from the property of Bryan Greensill’s farm, of Keiiepuni Sound. Tim cattle allegedly were sold to a stock dealer and subsequently traced to a Pieton butcher. The defence was a complete denial oi the sale of the cattle. The Magistrate remained that the evidence was not very string but accused would be committed for trial, bail being' allowed each accused of £ff()() own reognisance, and one surctv of like amount.

At the creditors meeting of William Quun. a Chinese storekeeper, the bankrupt's assets were shown at £l2 sterling and the amount owing to unsecured creditors at £IOO ..sterling, after being .in business for three months.
