MUNSTER TO INVESTIGATE N.Z. SCHEME.

WELLINGTON

April 0

Mr 1). 11. Drummond (Minister for Education in tin l New South Wales Government;, who is accompanied by Mrs Drummond, arrived in Wellington by the Maungnnui from Sydney tliis morning. 'Mr Drummond said that, in the first place, the purpose of his visit was very largely to see something of New Zealand, and to become better acquainted with the country.

“Officially, as Minister for Education.” lie added, “I have come to look into your delinquent children control system and the extension of that work to the minors from 18 to 21 years of age, who are being dealt with in your Borstal Institutions, about which I have heard a good deal. That system so far has not boon attempted in New South Wales. That is the principal official mission I have in view. Anything else will be entirely incidental. With the consent of my colleague, the Minister for Health, I hope also to meet some people who are interested in the .Mental Defectives Act. Wo have a Bill dealing with that matter at present under consideration in New South Wales, and in view of the forward point that such legislation has reached in this Dominion I hope to obtain some very useful information.

“Our first impression on entering Wellington harbour was exceedingly favourable, ft is quite up to expectations. quite equal to the description given us by the enthusiastic New Zealander we met oil board. My present intention is to leave by the Anrangi from Auckland on April 22ud. T will probably make a brief visit to the South Island. I want, if possible, to inspect your Borstal Institute at Invercargill and I may extend inv visit a few days to enable mo to do that.”

Asked if be bad anything to say with regard to any new features in connexion with the education system °f New South Wales, Mr Drummond said:
