The half-yearly sitting of thi* Supreme Court opened to-day before’ Justice Smith. Mis Honour in an address to the Grand Jury, said Wairarapa was in ' the fortunate position of having only one criminal ease arising out of the last six months. This was a matter for congratulation. The criminal east' is one in which Owen Llewellyn Udy is charged with intent to do actual bodily harm and with doing actual bodily harm hv allegedly .stabbing his father on a farm at. Carterton.

THE FATHER’S EVIDENCE. MASTER TON, April 9

Albert John Udy, the accused’s father, who has now fully recovered, said that'lie had some liquor mi the day. in question, and had no very clear recollection of what happened. He was quite certain that his son did not intend to stab him. Judge Smith said that was a question entirely for flic Jury. The only other Crown witnesses were two Carterton constables and Detective Jarrold, of Wellington.

The detective put in a statement by the accused in which the accused admitted slabbing Ins lather. The defence called two sisters of the accused, whose, evidence went to show that the incident was accidental.

Counsel for the accused said that the accused and liis mother would give evidence.

The hearing was adjourned until tomorrow.
