OTIRA TUNNEL

lIANGLING 2000 TONS A DAY.

Th P huge increase in traffic through the Otira tunnel from west to east during the past live years is shown in the figures for that period which have just been compiled. The tunnel was opened on August 4, 1923, and tlie following figures deal with complete years, which begin on April l.

The totals are as follow: April I. 1924. to Alar. 31. 1923 320.309

1923-20 377.023 1920-27 423.411 1927- 479.074 1928- 349.328 No record is available of the traffic from east to west, which is mostly made up of empty return trucks.

The tunnel, when it was built, was designed to handle 1000 tons of goods a day, but although the equipment has not been increased, it is now satisfactorily handling nearly 2tXM) tons a da v on the 300 working days of the year.
