The Westland County Council is putting in hand the extension of a lurtlier
section of Station road at Koiterangi. also Hie improvement of the Three Mile inland track at Okarito. Tenders will e called shortly for metalling the ..,'st section of the Knmnrn-Kapilea road. In addition bridge works at La Fontaine and Koiterangi are in band.
Tn connection with the local body elections which fall to be held next month, it is expected Mr G. A. Perry wifi enioy the usual “walk-over” for the mayoralty. There is not any mention so far of “fresh blood” for the Council. Tn the County contests for the representatives for the Central and Southern Ridings are considered likely. In neither Municipal or County affairs arc there at the moment any burning questions to excite special interest in the contest.

There was a large and representative gathering of the staff of the Marine Department at Wellington yesterday to bid farewell to Mr William CulI’u. Cii.ef Surveyor of Ships and Chief Examiner of Engineers, who has retired after twenty-nve years’ service with tlie Department. The Minister of Marine (the Hon .J. G. Cobhe) presided, fn handing .Air Cullen a well-filled wallet of hank notes on liehalf of the staff of the Alarine Department, the .Minister wished him and Afrs Cullen every possible happiness in the future.
Dr T. E. Telford, during a visit to outli Westland last week, saw many wood-pigeons in the forested area lietween the Alikonui River and the Big Waitaha. In one tree he .saw four. He was told that in all the forests there they are plentiful, feeding on the berries of the white-pine trees. The piost plentiful native bird there just now, I)r Telford states, is the bellbird. It may be seen everywhere In the forests, and its hell-like notes ring out continuously. The fantails are in evidence, but Dr Telford did not see manv tom-tits.
