HUMAN REMAINS

FOUND IN OTAGO QUARRY

DUNEDIN. April 8

Smne human remains were uncovered last week at the new quarry which is b ung opened by the Harbour Board at the North Spit. A steam excavator, which is being used to remove the sand accumulated against the stone face, disclosed the entrance to a low cave. At the entrance two human skulls and a number of bones were found in the sand. About 30 feet from the cave another skull was uncovered, at: thi' base of the low cliff, lrom which stone will soon be quarried for use at the mole at the harboui entrance.

The bones were discoloured, having evidently been buried for a long time, but the skulls were in a fairly good state of preservation. One lower jawbone was intact, and none of the teeth was missing from it. So tar as is known the only Maori burial ground on that side of tin' harbour was situated about a mile away from when' these bones were found.

Set mant .McCarthy visited the Spit on Saturday and brought the remains to Pert Chalmers.
