SIREX WOOD WASPS
PARASITES FOR NEW ZEALAND. LONDON. Eeb. 24. In a report of the Imperial Forestry Institute of Oxford, reference is made to the work under Mr R. N. Ohrystal in connexion witTi Sirex wood wasps. Considerable progress lias been made during the year (says the report). The biological work on Sirex lias been completed in col laibora Lion with the parasite laboratory ol the Imperial Bureau of Entomology at l'arnham Royal: the biology of the parasite I balin' leucospoidcs Tloehomv (Hyineiioptera Cynipidae) is now known in its main details, having been investigated by Air Cbrystal. while flu* major portion ol the biological work upon Rhyssa persuasoria L. (H.ymeuoptera lehneuinondiae) has been carried out by Dr J. G. Myers at the Earnham Royal laboratory. These biological studies appear to afford some conception of the host relationships of the two parasites, ami steps have been taken, therefore, to attempt the collection of Rhyssa persuasoria in numbers for shipment to New Zealand, with a view to dealing with the Sirex problem.
