There is a fine stretch of concrete road between Napier, the seaside capital,.and Hastings, the inland capital of the province noted for its woo-l and football. It is one of the few concrete thoroughfares that one will find outside the Auckland district (says the Auckland “Star”). The distance between the two towns is twelve miles, and thanks to the motor-bus service run by tlie Railway Department one can do the return journey for Is 6d.— surely the cheapest bus fare in the Dominion. Naturally this tempting strip of perfect roadway tempts the local motor people. Probably the record is held by a taxi driver who, when asked if fast times had been recorded, replied, reminiscently, “1 did it once in 13 minutes—and got, three quid for the job!”
