In aviation circles, it is stated that it is hoped to secure for this country four world records during the present year. They are the- duration and nonstop records, which the Eairey-Nnpier monoplane is expected to make by flying from the Cranwell Aerodrome to Durban, a speed record which will lie attacked immediately after the race for the Schneider Trophy, and an altitude record.
The altitude record is regarded as the most fascinating of the tour. Plans are being made to beat the record figure of 39,000 feet. It is hoped to evolve an all-metal areoplnne capable of climbing at least eight miles, or 42,000 feet. The selected pilot will undergo special training, lie will wear electrically warmed clothing, and will lie provided with oxygen apparatus, which be will himself be able to control.
