SAFETY AT SEA

LONDON CONFERENCE

(British Official Wireless.)

11UGBY, April 2.

Representatives of all the leading maritime Powers will attend an international conference on safety of life at sea, which will open in London on April 10. Much importance is attached to the conference in authoritative circles here, and the President of the Hoard of Trade,. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lis-ter. will extend an official welcome to tlie delegates on behalf of the Government.

It is many years since the last conference of the same nature, attended by delegates from twelve maritime nations, was held in London, after the loss of the Titanic. On that occasion a convention embodying a general agreement on various points was unar.i. iuously approved, but was only ratified by some of the signatory Powers, and partly on account of the war, it was in no case brought into force in its entirety. Proposals for revision of the convention, in the light of recent experience in connection, with British ships, were drafted two years ago by the Hoard of Trade and submitted to foreign countries, India and the Dominions. These will provide the basis for discussion at this month’s conference. It is believed that there is a good prospect of securing an agreement on tho amended convention.
