OUTBREAK OF FIRE
IX HERBERT STREET. OREYMOUTH, April 3
Shortly before 7.30 last evening an outbreak of fire occurred at the residence of Mr J. Deere. Herbert Street. The fire started in a front bedroom, and was soon blazing fiercely, the street being filled with spectators. Fortunately, the brigadesmen were all present at the station when the alarm was given, and were on the scene before the bell stopped ringing. Assisted by some of the neighbours, tbe firemen ii.a remarkably smart work in quelling the flames, and preventing the fire from spreading to the rear portion of the house. The room in which the fire originated is badly damaged by fire and water, as also was tbe passage and the eaves. Another bedroom in the front oif the house had the window curtains scorched, but was otherwise undamaged by the fire. The exact cause, of the outbreak is uncertain, but i: is surmised that one of the daughters, while preparing for a dance,.. dropped a match, which came in contact with the window curtains and ignited them.
