E, Bush, who has resigned to go to Brisbane, are to he called by Auckland City Council in Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Preference is he given to the applicant possessing a : thorough knowledge of town-planning. | The salary is to he £ISOO a year, rising to £2OOO by annual increments of €IOO. DRUNKEN DRIVER. TE AWAMUTU, March 30 The Te Awamutu Court to-day fined Russell V. Clark £lO for being intoxicated while in charge of a car. His driver’s license was cancelled for two years. Accused was a taxi driver resident at Ivihikihi. With a companion he had taken two girls joy-riding, the evidence showing that all had partaken of liqiior. The court described accused as a menace on the roads. SPECTACULAR FIRE. WELLINGTON,, March 31. An outbreak of fire occurred yesterday afternoon in the Wellington Gas Coy’s building at Miramar, used for tb e purpose of making fire bricks. Fortunately, beyond the fact that the , roof was completely destroyed, and a large area of grass burned, no damage was done to the plant. Brickmaking, however, will be suspended for about two weeks. i The great volumes of dense black smoke ascending for some time, led ; people to suspect that a disastrous lire had occurred. ENDEAVOURING TO ENTER RIVER. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 31. The auxiliary ketch Aratapu, of 125 tons, went ashore at the entrance to the Waitara river on Saturday, and is still fast, apparently on the mud bottom. ■ On Friday night the vessel, when en , mute from Westport for Waitara with . coal, called at New Plymouth to shelter from blustering weather. On Satl urday she resumed her voyage and i went aground while endeavouring to enter the river port with the high tide. I The ketch is rocking badly but at i present it is not seriously feared that > she will he damaged while she remains in her present position, although it <s possible that she may not he refloated until the next spring tide, attempts so fur having been unsuccessful. : A DARING ATTEMPT. TO ROB BANK. OPOTIKT, April 2. Although the Bank of New Zealand ! is opposite the police station, a daring attempt was made to rob the hank yesterday. Being a holiday, no one was on the premises and when the manager’s son returned at 4.40 Ho found the place open and explosives fitted into the strong room door. The detonator was not lit and the indications were that the robbers were d*sturhed. boating carni val, kawatiri loses CTP. WESTPORT, March 31. A lioating carnival was held on the Ruller River this afternoon, the outstanding attraction being tbe rowing race for the Gothard Cup, betweenKawatiri, Westport (holders) and Nelson (challengers'. The latter won by six lengths. The winners were the more hefty crew, and rowed a fine swinging stroke, which gave them a load earlv in the race. '['lie race between the secondary crows of Nelson and Kawatiri was on by tbe latter by four lengtns. The motor launch race was won by Jackson’s Acme. Tim cup was presented to the Nelson crow at a social to-night, when ~.e team was congratulated on its victorv. and assured that a Kawatiri crew would visit Nelson during the next rowing season, to endeavour to recover the coveted trophy.
