ANN UAL CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association! WELLINGTON, April 1. The annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party opened to-day. In the absence of the President, Rev. Archer, who will not attend until tomorrow, Mr ,1. Thorn, Vice-President opened the proceedings. Visiting delegates were welcomed by Air J. Bromley, Secretary of the Wellington District Council of the Alliance of Labour. The conference is attended by about ICO delegates.

In regard to uneniplo.vinent the annual report of the Labour Party says that whereas the United Party promised to abolish unemployment it has been in charge for three months and unemployment figures and resultant distress are greater than ever. Unless the Government sees that reasonable rates are paid on relief works, it will he placed where the Reform Government now lies. The report says that if intermittent employment is inevitable tlu'ii an insurance fund should be established at once to sustain children and mothers and maintain homes. The reports adds while the Party agrees with some plunks of the Government’s policy, it opposes the Government’s attitude in regard to State trading and says tlu- Labour Party will use ali its resources to conserve the benefits of tlu- far-seeing legislation of earlier statesmen, while at the -.aim- lime doing all in its power to extend every public service that will give a greater return to J" community.
