THE EARTHQUAKE
WAS LAKE SUMNER THE CENTRE ? CHRISTCHURCH. April 1. It is the opinion of Mr William Mockett, oif Culverden, that the centre >f the recent earthquake which caused o much alarm at Arthur’s Pass was nt Lake Sumner. Speaking to a representative of “Tim Press,” Mr Mockett said the ’quake was so severe that it raised a wave about ten feet in height on the la ice. uul tossed a boat with an outboard motor high and dry over a fence on t” • n adjoining piece of land. The’quake • t lso caused a portion of a shingle bank to fall into the lake. Mr Mockett added that at the time of tbe big ’quake at Cheviot some years ago, a crack several miles in length was opened in the mnuntalnclose to Lake Sumner, which was a thermal region possessing hot springs similar to those at Ha timer. Lake Sumner, which is a beautiful sheet of water, is reached by a road about 35 miles in length, westward from Hawarden. The road may be used bv motor traffic, although it is rough in parts
