AN EXPLOSION

ABOARD DREDGE KAIONE

ENGINEER KILLED.

By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)

WANGANUI, March 28. The dredge Kaione is at present being fitted to proceed to Nelson. This morning soon after operations started the deck hands were startled by a loud explosion which sent a shower of glass about their heads. As soon as tho fumes were sufficiently cleared an investigation showed that Joseph Cable, chief engineer of the dredge, was lying in the floor of a cabin aft, dead, and Duncan McKinnon, second engineer, and MMlliam MyKeogh, greaser, were in a tunnel below badly injured.

The services of Castlecliff brigade were requisitioned, also a doctor from the warship Veronica, and some of the crew, and with the use of gas masks the men were brought from the tunnel and hurried to the hospital. The bottom of the cabin which is immediately above the tunnel was blown out. and it is surmised that ( able was lifted uith the force of the explosion and banged against the roof of the cabin, his neck being broken. r lhe top of the hatch was lifted off and the glass, surrounding it shattered. Cable’s wife at present is on a holiday visit to Melbourne. It is presumed that benzine and oil fumes from the tunnel caused the tragedy. The three men had been checking the ship’s stores.
