A plucky and successful resistance against the combined savage attack of two hawks was made bv the 11-year-old son of Mr Joseph Smith, of Maroinaku, North Auckland, on a recent. Sunday afternoon, states the “New Zealand Herald.” The hoy was passing through some fern when he disturbed a pair of hawks feeding on something they haci killed. I hoy attacked him simultaneously, one at his nook and the other at a leg. He was fort unate in having a knife with him and lie used it to good effect to heat them off. at the same time calling for help. He also managed to wound and secure them hy beating them \\ ith a stick lie picked up, after which lie took the birds home, where they were found to have a wing-spread of over 4ft each. Tin; hoy’s face, and arms were badly marked by‘the claws and beaks of the birds, and he had to be treated when lie arrived home. The death occurred at Westport on Tuesday afternoon-of Mrs Thomas Butterworth. The date Mrs ■ Bntterworth arrived in the Buller district many years ago. when her husband took up mild mining on the northern terraces. Later they removed to Charleston and then to Wellington, hut returned to Westport. Tlie late Mr Bntterworth died some five years ago. The deceased lady leaves a family of four sons and one daughter; Messrs Thomas, James and John of Westport and William of Barrytown ; and Mrs Ben Parsons, of Wellington.
