The elder Hallett has, in his yohth,'. replenished his depleted stocks from Hie herds of his neighbours.
The ranch is sold to pay off the debts, blit Lane, the youngi* son, forgets liis promise and gambles his share away. This throws the bulk of the responsibility on Buck. As each rancher is paid off Buck draws a line
through the brand. Finally there is but one brand left, and Buck is-re-luctant' to- negotiate with the owner. Tile owner of the “Broken Bell’ 5 ranch is Coiinie Marsh, whom Buck loves deeply. Buck endeavours to protect CLane from the villainous hotel owner, ' Maggert, who has Lane in his toils, and is using him in liis nefarious undertakings. Accused of being a member of Maggert’s gang, Buck stages a daring comeback and in a very convincing manner-.:obtai.ns proof of his innocence, and at . the same time brings the downfall of Maggert.
