ROTORUA-TAUPO RAILWAY
WORK TO BE STOPPED. WELLINGTON, March 11. It has been decided by the Government that the new railway from Rotorua towards Taupo is to be stopped as soon as the men employed on the construction and their 'families' can he transferred to similar work elsewhere./- j ‘•Ministers came to this conclusion,” i | stated Sir Joseph Ward to-nightf, ) “that this railway is quite unjust- . 3 liable, and could not possibly he 100%- m*. ed upon as at all likely to help in interest contribution on the large cost# ; involved. “This decision does not in any way imply that the Government wiH not help to effect land settlement on ttie pumice country. Tlie Minister ol Lands has been authorised to take this matter in hand with a view to making portions of that land available for settlement, and to have a complete analysis of the land made by expert authorities. “The Ministers who have visited the locality are of opinion that motor services on good roads will more than meet the transport requirements of the district for many years to come.” •A . ——— s
