THE EARTHQUAKE
(I E() LOG I STS’ AN ALY SIS. MOUNTAIN FAULT THE CAUSE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. The nature of tlu* Arthur’s Pass earthquake, according to geologists, suggests that it is due to a geological fault, or subsidence, in the region of Arthur’s Pass, and to a movement in the Southern Alps. These mountains are generally regarded as stable, but geologists say that it is passible that the fault to be seen in the Kaikoura Ranges continues along the Southern Alps. Earthquake maps do not class the Alps as within the seismic area, hut it is hold that they certainly should he, because there have been disturbances at points along their entire length.
