PUBLIC HOSPITALS
ADVANTAGE TO COMMUNITY. (By Telegraph—Press Association). PALMERSTON N., March 12. The extent to which the general public is taking advantage of service offered by Hospital Institutions throughout the Dominion was explained by Mr Stallworthy (Minister of Health) at the opening of the Hospitals Boards Conference this afternoon. During 1927 said the Minister the total admission into public hospitals, other than maternity hospitals was (58,1103. There were 4153 patients in the hospitals in the beginning of the year so the total cases dealt with was 72,755, equal to 506 per 10,(XX) mean population, including Maoris. In other words one person out of every twenty in the Dominion received, in some degree, medical treatment in public hospitals. The figures are a. considerable increase over 1926. These figures were for inpatients, and if outpatients were added and also those treated in private hospitals and their homes, probably it would be found that one out of every ten wore under medical treatment in 1927.
