PICNIC DISASTER

POISONED WITH ICE-CREAM

(Australian Press Association). (United Service).

SYDNEY, March 10

Over forty persons, mostly children, were stricken apparently with ptomaine poisoning at a Church picnic near Newcastle yesterday. The children lunched and then began sports and games, when ice cream was suggested and was served to the youngsters. Immediately a little one fell writhing to the ground, and while the alarmed elders were attending her, other children lay on the ground suffering great pain.

Soon several adults were overcome, and horrified friends made hurried calls for medical aid.

Forty-three victims were treated at Newcastle Hospital, where ten were admitted. Some of the .younger ones are in a serious condition.

FURTHER PARTICULARS,

(Received this day at 9.25. a.m.) NEWCASTLE, March 11. All those admitted to the hospital as a result of the poisoning at the Sunday School picnic are now out ol danger. Altogether seventy were treated. Complete mystery appears to envelope the poisoning. All efforts to trace the source failed.
