FIRE AT BLACKBALL,

GREYMOUTH. March 11
A fire at Blackball last night destroyed the store of James Haisty, and residence of Samuel Taylor. A bucket brigade prevented a further spread of the lire. Insurances are un available.
ALLEGED FORGERY.
GREYMOUTH, March 11
George Edward Mills was charged at Court to-day with forging a letter of credit for £2OO sterling, purporting to be signed by John Cron, of Haast, amt uttering same to Dalget.v and Co.. Greymouth. He was remanded for a week. The police stilted further charges were possible.
FOUND DEAD

Claude Hector Olsen, first assistant of the Carterton District High School and acting head master since the beginning of the term was found dead in the science room on Saturday morning. He had been experimenting with cyonide potassium and left a note saving.—“ Took a drink thought it was water, must have been—”. The letter then trailed off. A post morten was held and an inquest opened yesterday and adjourned till the contents of the stomach are analysed. Deceased was aged 27 and was a clever writer of topical verse, contributing to many periodicals in New Zealand and Australia. He leaves a young widow, but no family.
CHINESE SUICIDES
DUNEDIN, March 11
Ah Tong, aged 77, who had been an inmate of the Benevolent Institute for several weeks was found dead hanging in a. woolshed at the Benevolent yesterday morning.
EUCHRE TOURNAMENTS. CHRISTCHURCH, March 11
Answering a deputation to-day in regard to euchre parties, Hon. T. Wilford said “I cannot give anyone the right to break the law. What you can do is to work for its repeal, and T believe there are very few members in Parliament to-day who would vote against an amendment to the Act to give you what you want. The deputation represented, school committees, lodges and others.
CAR ACCIDENTS. .•PAHTATUA, March 11. Mesdames J. C. Davidson and Stuart Austin, Mr McKinnon and nurse T. Hitchcock were knocked down near town on Saturday night by a car driven by C. Lembers, a settler of Rock Road, Ivanini. All received injuries, but with the exception of Mistress Austin all were able to go home. Mrs Austin who is still unconscious, is an inmate of the Public Hospital. A car accident happened at Konini, Percy Treadgold and Mrs M. Cairns of Wellington in a car left the road and overturned in the water-table. Treadgold has a severe cut on the eye and nose and the lady abrasions to the head also cuts and bruises. The victims were brought to town for medical aid.
A third accident on the same day happened to a three seater car proceeding from Lower Hutt to Waipukurau military camp, which skidded in loose metal and landed in a ditch. The occupants, young men whose names are at present unobtainable escaped unhurt.
RYE-ELECTION. WELLINGTON, March 11. Interviewed in regard to the Bay < f Islands bye-election, Sir Joseph Ward stated that owing to the circumstances responsible for bringing about the elution and over which neither candalate had any control, he had deli r‘tel y decided not to put up a candidate. Supporters of the United Party were therefore tree to exercise their ow.i discretion in the matter of voting. the organisation remaining strictly" neutral. “However,” stated Sir Joseph, “it is my intention” to put a candidate up for the next election regardless of the number of candidates.
SOLICITORS STRUCK OFF ROLL. WELLINGTON, March 11. The Appeal Court to-day struck Hector Robert Malcolm, solicitor, oi Auckland, and Percival Lewis Cribb Inder, solicitor, of Christchurch, Ml' the roll for breach of trust. The former was stated to have absconded.
A SERIOUS CHARGE. MASTERTON, March 11. At the Juvenile Court to-day, a hoy was remanded on a charge that near Eketahuna on March Bth he did a certain act likely to cause serious injury to a railway train by placing three plugs of gelignite explosive cn !i,e railway line.
