The police raided a meeting bouse and arrested over a thousand anarchist members of a Polish terrorist organisation, known as the “Black French.” They seized compromising documents, which some men tried to burn or to swallow.

A NOTABLE THIEF. PARIS, Alarch 9. As a sequel to the recovery of Murillo’s “Tintorettos” picture, cabled on Alarch Bth., a picture dealer named Fernand Lafitte has-been arrested, with an accomplice named Sohkrob. They attempted the theft of the pictures for the purpose of drawing the insurance money. Lafitte lias had a chequered career. He was apprenticed to a. pastrycook and migrated to Canada, where lie was cowboy, barman and smuggler. He returned to France, swindled many women ami married Aladame Chardoiinet, who was mistress jf a wealthy nobleman. Lafitte once allegedly robbed her of two million francs worth of jewellery, and a large sum of money. She sealed up the door of her apartment, whereupon Lafitte defied the bailiffs at the revolver point, and removed a number of articles, including pictures, with wbic-h lie is now charged with stealing. They were originally the gift of- tlie nobleman to (Jlnirdonnet. Lafitte repeatedly pretended insanity in order to avoid the consequences of his actions. Char, donnet lias since secured a divorce.
