LONDON, March 7. “The; Times*’ correspondent at Funchal* in Madiera states: After a prolonged drought, torrential rains have fall'en inland. The River Vincente rose rapidly, eroding its banks. The inhabitants of the village oi Hosarie fled uphiTl in a panic, driving their cattle before them. They suddenly .became overwhelmed in landslides and enormous boulders. Many were swept back to the river, and were carried to sea. Others were
buried. The, landslides continued for hours
A nuihlier of rescuers, including foremen and ambulances were buried, •m- is estimated that forty are dead. Several bodies have been recovered at the bar at the river’s mouth, and others in the river near Rosario.
News from Funchal (Madiera) states that forty head of cattle were killed, and scores were swept away in one landslide at Sao Vincente. A house also collapsed.
