A FIRE

OUTBREAK IN REVELL STREET

This morning at 4.10 o’clock, Constable P. Dougherty, while on duty, discovered a fire in the front shop of Mr L. Reid, of the Hygiene Fish Mart, in Bevel! Street, opposite the New Zealand Clothing Factory’s shop. The window was all ablaze, the flames running up to the ceiling. The Constable gave the alarm and ran down and rang the lire bell, a sharp alarm then being rung out by the nightwatchman. A'ery promptly a hose reel was run up to the scene of the fire which by this time had burst through the front of the building and was lighting up the street, causing much misgiving as to its extent. AA’ith a Gold Star fireman, an ex-member of the local Brigade at Ul9 hydrant, a jet of water was quickly available, and the danger of any spread of the fire was at once killed, the flames collapsing with the strong stream ot water. A second line was run and soon the only work necessary was to extinguish the smouldering wood. The front shop was practically gutted, but the damage did not extend bevond.

Neither buildings on either side, those of W. E. Richards (printing works) or E. J. Lloyd (grocer) received any damage whatever, another tribute to the smart work of the Brigade with its capital water supply. The building which is owned by M,rs Long, was insured in the State Office for £l5O, and Guardian Office for £2OO. The occupier, Mr Reid, had no insurance. The damage done is about £IOO.
