THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
EXPORT MARKET REVIEWED. Market conditions affecting the dairy industry are dealt with in the following statement, issued to suppliers of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company,, Ltd. by Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd.
The statement says that prior to January 19 the market had been very active, but since then it had become very quiet, with brief periods of activity. The more important buying interests were obviously holding off to depress the market, then filling up quickly, before tlie demand caused prices to lift very much. Probably the improved situation in Australia had influenced London, but while exports from the Commonwealth would show a substantial increase, it was too. late in the season for them to materially affect the statistical position, which was fairly sound.
Over 500,000 boxes of New Zealand butter were due to arrive in the United Kingdom in March, but this quantity represented only about a fortnight’s consumption for the whole of Great Britain. April arrivals of New Zealand butter would probably amount to 275,000 boxes.
It might be expected that the present exceptionally cold weather in Europe would adversely afFect production, but as the herds were invariably stalled at this time of the year it- was not likely that production would be materially affected, unless the cold spell delayed the opening of spring.
