MAN DROWNED
■IN BATHING PLACE. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] DUNEDJN, March 4. James Rackley, a young man, aged 20 years, was drowned while bathing in the surf at St. Hilda yesterday afternoon. Accompanied by a girl, Miss Marion O’Connell, lie was bathing about 100 yards on the Lawyer’s Hoad side of the safety zone, which is clearly marked by two red flags. ! here were few people about at the time, but those who sinv the bathers did net at first realise that they were in any danger, as both swimmers were within their depth. On hearing the g’’ rl call out, another swimmer helped her ashore, while two otelms aiA-mpied to swim out to Rackley. A very heavy surf was running, and this in conjunction with a strong t: do iip setting towards Lawyer’s Head, lendered their efforts futile, and by the time they were able to reach the spot where Rackley was last s-.cn, ho had disappeared. Rackley was employed at lock’s Foundry. Ttiis is the hist drowning accident wiieli has o. cuneil at St. Hilda for nearly five years. The body has not been rocovviod.
