SERIOUS CHARGE

TE KUITI, March 4
John Appleton, forty, single, a farmer twelve miles from TV Kuiti is in a critical condition in the hospital as the result of injuries received on Saturday afternoon. Appleton was successfully operated on Sunday night but his condition is still serious. In a statement made to the police the injured man alleged that during a dispute over water rights, with John McKay •Smith and Neils Theodore Larsen, neighbouring fanners, he was struck on the head with a piece of limestone. He went' to his whnre and later was discovered by a passer-by and taken to a nearby house. A doctor was summoned and Appleton was sent to the hospital with a serious wound in the bead. Larsen and Smith were arrested and appeared before Justices on Sunday, and were remanded to appear on Tuesday morning. They were released on bail of £2OO of their own and one surety of £2OO.
