A PROFITABLE VENTURE
.'By Telegraph—Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, Feb. 28.
Laden with -19,000 barrels of oil, representing a gross return of approximately £245,000, and a catch of 543 whales, or 8000 tons-of whales, the Sir James Clark Ross steamed into Paterson Inlet, Stewart Island, at -1 p.m. on Wednesday after four months in the frozen waters of Ross Sea. The season, in its earlier stages, did not promise well, but later the five chasers attached to the factory- ship struck rich whaling grounds, and the men were kept at it in twelve-hour watches, day and night, to cope with the large number of whales brought in. Better weather than was experienced last year was met with on this occasion, and, although lower whales were procured, it is stated that the amount o-l oil is greater. No diminution in the number of whales'was noticed. From Paterson Inlet, the vessel proceeds to American ports, via Panama to discharge her valuable cargo, leaving probably on Tuesday next, after coaling.
