In the House of Commons, lit. Hon. \\. Churchill (Chancellor of the Exchequer) revealed that the Irish Free State, in tin* first place, demanded that Britain should take over at face value the Hritish silver coinage in use in Ireland, which was estimated at from one and a-lialf to three millions sterling. He said he lyul naturally demurred at this, owing to the cost to the Hritish taxpayer. The Free State then pointed out that Britain had assisted both South Africa and Australia by repatriating their coinage at its face value. .■Viler negotiations, said Mr Churchill, a compromise was reached, under which Britain should accept silver coins from Ireland to the extent ol three-quarters of a million sterling spread over ten years. This was estimated to cost the Exchequer half a million. (Note.—The Irish Free State has issued a new coinage of its own recently, consisting of half-crown, ,florin, shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny, halfpenny, and farthing.)
