Tile Nautical Court to-day considered the stranding and the loss of the motor scow Zingara on the Hokitika bar, and without retiring was unanimous the loss was not due to negligence on the part of the master or any member of the crew. The ship failed to answer tlje helm, and afterwards it was found the starboard steering chain had been carried away. The gear had been examined the day before and appeared to be in order. NEXT BAND CONTEST TO BE HELD AT WELLINGTON. WANGANUI, March 1. As Wellington was the only applicant it was decided at to-day’s conference of the North Island Brass Bands’ Association that the 1930 championships contest be held in that citiy. Judge Smith, described tins as most reprehensible conduct. The jury could form their own conclusions as to the credulity of his evidence. CHILD LOvSES A LEG. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 28.* Mary Winter, aged 11, was struck by a passing tram car on Ferry Road the wheels passing over one foot almost severing it. She was removed at once to the hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate her leg. Her other injuries are not serious. Her condition is reported to be improving. XFGLIGENT MOTORING. . MOItRINSYILLE, March 1. A fine of £2O was imposed on 11. D. W. Tanner, of Wailii, on a charge of negligent driving at an excessive speed, at the Magistrate’s Court today. The evidence showed that Tanner had three previous convictions and his license, had been cancelled for two years, when he met with ail accident out of which the present proceeding arose.
